It is with great sadness that we report that former Coxswain Len Patten passed away on 11 January 2015.

Len joined Newhaven lifeboat in 1968 as signalman having previously been an auxiliary coastguard at Newhaven. He served as Coxswain/Mechanic from 1977 until he retired in 1988. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1988. He received a Framed Letter of Thanks signed by the Chairman of the RNLI for his actions on 16 October 1987 when the crew of 5 of a French trawler were saved in the aftermath of the Great Storm. Full details can be found on the Callouts - Historic Archive page of this site.

Our thoughts are with Len's family and friends at this sad time.

Founded in 1803 the Newhaven Lifeboat Station is amongst the oldest in the country. Formed some 21 years before the Royal National Lifeboat Institution
itself, it celebrated its' 200th Anniversary in May 2003. From these pages you can learn a little of our Station’s past and hopefully a lot more about its’ present and future. In creating this site we have used a large number of photographs from the Station's archives for which we do not have details of the original owners. Wherever possible when the originator of a photograph is known for certain we have given appropriate credit. If you have any photographs of the Newhaven Lifeboat on service which you would be prepared to allow us to use on this site, with appropriate credit given, please contact the webmaster.
